Mens Running Shorts

Men’s running shorts are available in lots of styles. They are typically lightweight and can be used for other sports aside from running such as volleyball, basketball, boxing, etc.

Running shorts come in varying lengths. This usually varies between half an inch inseam to ten inches. For running, you should look for shorts that are on the shorter side as longer shorts can impede the running motion. Polyester and lycra are the two most popular materials for mens running shorts. Look fo shorts that also have these features: Inner lining, elastic waist band, pockets and side splits. These features are common on the best quality shorts.

The material that mens running shorts are made from is equally important. There are many fabrics to choose from  but you should go for soft, breathable fabrics which wick moisture. Wicking is one of the most important characteristics of the short material because if wetness soaks into the fabric next to the skin you will almost certainly see chaffing occur. Nylon and cotton should be avoided for this reason. A durable material is also essential as your shorts could be getting lots of wear. Try to choose brands that are known for quality even if it means paying a bit extra. You will be paying for the logo of course but often these well known brands also make shorts of superior quality.

You should avoid unisex shorts and stick only to mens running shorts due to the big differences between male and female bodies in the hip and leg areas.

You will see shorts labeled as split leg or v-notch. These differences speak to the different seam styles on the outside of the legs. In split leg shorts, the legs are not sewn. Instead the front is over lapped on the back. In the v-notch style, the seams are sewn on the length of the leg until just before the hem where the notching is done. You will most often see this style of mens running shorts but the split leg style does offer good flexibility. Unless you are a professional runner, the notched style will be fine.

Length is not so important, it is really a matter of personal taste. However you should try to avoid long shorts on short runs and vice versa. If you are going to choose shorts with pockets (which is a good idea if you have keys or a wallet with you on the run) then ensure that the pocket is sewn very close to the waistband which will minimize the items bouncing around and causing discomfort. You can either get pockets at the sides (good for tennis), on the inside of the waistband and on the back (nutritional pocket).
